TIFF 2026 Women Directors Hit 35% Two Years Early

At Friday night’s Variety and Chanel Women in Film dinner during the Toronto Film Festival, the industry got a clear set of numbers on gender parity: progress in the festival pipeline, and a persistent gap in the commercial market.

The dinner drew Oscar and Emmy winners including Michelle Yeoh, Patricia Arquette, Sarah Paulson and Colman Domingo, alongside Chanel ambassadors Ayo Edebiri and Lily-Rose Depp. But the most consequential lines were about data, not celebrity.

The headline stat

TIFF’s Chief Business and Marketing Officer Jennifer Frees said 35% of the 2026 official selection is directed or co-directed by women — a target the festival had set for 2028. The lineup reached the goal two years early, with titles including Rachel Morrison’s Love of Your Life and Beth de Araújo’s Josephine.

That festival-level progress was set against a harder commercial metric. Variety co-president and co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh noted that none of the top 15 films at the box office were solely directed by women.

Why the gap matters

For media planners, entertainment marketers and studio executives, those two data points describe the distance between festival recognition and commercial greenlights. A 35% festival share shows that women directors are delivering finished films and attracting official selection slots. The box office top 15 shows that the highest-grossing slate is still being shaped almost entirely by other voices.

The tension is not new. Festivals have used share targets and talent labs to widen the top of the funnel, while studio release slates remain harder to shift because they are shaped by financing, marketing risk and prior box office track records. That makes the TIFF statistic a useful early indicator, but not a confirmation of commercial change.

Setoodeh framed the dinner as a corrective networking moment. “If you’re an executive, here’s who you need to talk to,” he said, after asking female filmmakers and producers in the room to raise their hands.

  • 35% of TIFF 2026’s official selection is directed or co-directed by women — a 2028 goal reached two years early.
  • 0 of the top 15 box office films were solely directed by women, according to Variety’s Setoodeh.
  • 4 creators were named 2026 Chanel Women Creators’ Network fellows: Shannon Walsh, Hannah Vastinsalo, Shannon Welby and Amelia Eloisa.

The pipeline programmes

Frees tied the progress to accountability from organisations such as Chanel and Variety. The Chanel Women Creators’ Network, an extension of the TIFF Share Her Journey Writers’ Lab, was founded in 2020. Its 2025 fellow Carol Nguyen is debuting the documentary Still Night, Burning House at this year’s festival.

Variety co-president and publisher Dea Lawrence quoted the late Gloria Steinem in making the case for who gets to tell the story, not just who appears in it. The framing matters for buyers: festival slates are increasingly diverse, but commercial slates have not yet moved at the same speed.

The event assembled Ayo Edebiri, Lily-Rose Depp, Michelle Yeoh, Patricia Arquette, Courteney Cox and other talent, but the underlying brief was more data-driven than ceremonial. For ScreenStat readers, the actionable takeaway is to compare representation in acquisition and marketing pipelines with representation in release slates — and to track whether the TIFF number later translates into box office share.
