Ajay Devgn’s new opening-day record belongs to a suspense franchise, not a spectacle. Drishyam The Conclusion, directed by Abhishek Pathak, collected Rs. 62.03 crore on Day 1, making it the biggest opener of Devgn’s career.
The headline number
The figure is Rs. 18.33 crore higher than Singham Again, the previous record-holder at Rs. 43.70 crore. That works out to a 41.9% jump over Devgn’s previous best. It also towers over the rest of the star’s all-time top five.
- Drishyam The Conclusion – Rs. 62.03 crore
- Singham Again – Rs. 43.70 crore
- Singham Returns – Rs. 32.09 crore
- Golmaal Again – Rs. 30.14 crore
- Raid 2 – Rs. 19.71 crore
Why the genre matters
Devgn’s opening-day record had been built on big-canvas commercial films. Before this result, his top three Day 1 scores were all Rohit Shetty titles: Singham Again, Singham Returns and Golmaal Again. Lower down the top 10, the list also leans on established franchises such as Total Dhamaal, Drishyam 2, Shaitaan and Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior.
The fact that three of Devgn’s previous top four were Shetty action films made the opening-day chart look like a statement about spectacle. Drishyam The Conclusion rewrites that assumption: a narrative franchise with a strong crime-thriller hook can open above a big-budget action sequel, expanding the kind of film that can be positioned as an event release.
Drishyam The Conclusion breaks that pattern. It is a thriller sequel, not a mass action comedy, and it has opened more than four times as high as Drishyam 2, which started at Rs. 15.38 crore on Day 1. Drishyam 2 went on to finish at Rs. 240.54 crore in India, so the new chapter is not just a one-day event.
What to watch next
For media planners and entertainment marketers, the opening number measures advance intent, star pull and franchise equity. The next data points—weekend hold, Monday drop and the eventual lifetime multiplier—will show whether this is a front-loaded fan event or a title with real staying power.
The benchmark has moved. The question now is whether the film can convert a record start into a franchise-best total.
