Line of Fire opens with 8.6M viewers

NBC’s new Monday crime family drama Line of Fire has delivered the kind of opening broadcast networks rarely see for a 10 p.m. scripted show. The Joshua Safran-created series pulled 8.6 million viewers across platforms and encore broadcasts, according to data cited by TheWrap.

The number is notable less for its size than for where it lands. It gives NBC a 48% year-over-year lift in the Monday 10 p.m. slot that housed Brilliant Minds last fall. At a time when broadcast dramas are struggling to build after unscripted lead-ins, that is a meaningful schedule statement.

Premiere by the numbers

The first-week performance has three data points worth separating:

  • 8.6 million total viewers across platforms and encores
  • 48% year-over-year lift in the 10 p.m. Monday slot
  • 63% retention of The Voice lead-in audience

Nielsen data cited by TheWrap also shows the premiere delivered the best three-day DVR lift for an NBC drama premiere since Quantum Leap in 2022. That DVR lift matters because it captures delayed viewing that same-day ratings miss, and for an advertiser it points to audience that watches on its own schedule rather than only when the network programs it.

The week-two signal

But the more interesting number is what happened after the premiere. Line of Fire gained momentum in Episode 2, posting a 47% increase in the 18-49 demo from Episode 1. TheWrap attributes that jump to a major twist revealed at the end of the series premiere, which likely pushed new viewers to sample the second episode.

For marketers, that is a reminder that cliffhanger creative is not only a storytelling device. It functions as a zero-cost acquisition mechanic: it converts first-week curiosity into second-week viewing without an incremental paid campaign. At a moment when every network is fighting for attention, a twist that drives tune-in is a sample-and-hold lever.

What it means for NBC’s Monday

The strength extends beyond the show itself. With The Voice as lead-in, Line of Fire held 63% of its audience, a higher retention than NBC has seen from any previous drama in that timeslot. That helped lift the network’s Monday lineup 10% in total viewers and 11% in the 18-49 demo year-over-year.

For buyers, that schedule-level gain is more useful than a single overnight number. It suggests NBC now has a bridge from an unscripted powerhouse into a scripted hour, reducing the usual drop-off that makes 10 p.m. slots hard to sell.

What to watch next

The first two weeks are encouraging, but they are not yet a trend. The next test is whether the Episode 2 demo lift holds into weeks three and four, and how much of the total audience is coming from streaming versus linear. The report does not break out Peacock-only viewing, so the platform mix is still an open question.

Line of Fire airs Mondays at 10 p.m. PT on NBC.
