Prime Video renews Neagley after 40M viewers in 13 days

Renewal follows a 13-day sprint

Prime Video has ordered a second season of Neagley, the Maria Sten-led action series spun out of Reacher. The announcement comes weeks after the first season premiered on September 16, the same day the Reacher Season 4 finale hit the service.

The opening window gave Amazon MGM Studios a clear signal. In its first 13 days, Neagley reached 40 million viewers globally, making it the streamer’s No. 4 most-watched debut of an original series and placing its first season among the top 10 most-viewed seasons of any original series to date.

The numbers that made the call

  • 40 million global viewers in the first 13 days.
  • No. 4 most-watched original series debut for Prime Video.
  • 52% of the audience came from outside the U.S., led by the U.K., Germany and Brazil.
  • Top 10 among Prime Video’s most-viewed seasons of any original series.

That international split is the deeper story. A U.S. hit is useful for a domestic streaming business; a title that draws more than half its audience from abroad is a global content asset. For media planners, it suggests Neagley is being sampled as a standalone entry point, not just as a watch-along for Reacher loyalists.

Amazon did not detail how it counts a viewer, so the 40 million figure is best understood as a platform reach metric rather than an average minute audience number. What matters is internal consistency: by Prime Video’s own measurement, this is a top-four original launch.

The franchise logic

Amazon MGM Studios head of global TV Peter Friedlander framed the renewal as a bet on the character. “Audiences around the world have embraced Frances Neagley as a force all her own,” he said in a statement. He also credited Maria Sten’s performance and the creative team led by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton.

The launch mechanics are worth noting. Dropping the spinoff on the same day as the Reacher Season 4 finale effectively parked the new show in front of viewers already in the Reacher orbit. A guest appearance from Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher bridged the two titles on screen, while the marketing could lean on an established universe without requiring viewers to have watched every prior season.

Season 1 follows Frances Neagley after a friend from her past is killed in a suspicious accident and she becomes determined to find justice. The series, based on Lee Child’s novels, is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios, with Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Jasper Jones, Matthew Del Negro and Damon Herriman also in the cast.

What it means for the slate

The renewal is not just a creative endorsement; it is a data point for how Prime Video wants to scale franchises. Instead of relying solely on one marquee title, the service can use a known character to open a second front. With more than half the audience outside the U.S., that second front travels well.

For media buyers, the international composition changes the calculus. A young spinoff with 52% non-U.S. viewing can support regional campaign budgets earlier than a show that skews domestic. It also gives Amazon a second title to bundle in pitch decks when it argues that the Reacher franchise can deliver reach across multiple markets.

For entertainment marketers, the takeaway is simple: a spinoff is not filler when it is scheduled and cast as a franchise event. The next test is whether Season 2 holds the international share and moves from a strong debut to repeat performance. If it does, expect the Reacher universe to become a repeatable slate strategy rather than a one-off extension.
