Fewer shows, fuller theatres on Day 37

Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is showing why day-37 data still matters. The Malayalam film collected Rs 68 lakh net in India on Saturday, September 26, a 51.1% jump from Rs 45 lakh the day before, according to Sacnilk figures cited by The Times of India.

The rise came on fewer screens. Show count fell from 610 on Friday to 581 on Saturday, while overall occupancy improved from 20.2% to 29.0%. In exhibition language, that is a demand-concentration signal: the audience did not leave, the schedule did the work.

The cumulative picture

After 37 days, the film’s India net collection stands at Rs 162.10 cr, with India gross at Rs 189.23 cr. Overseas gross has reached Rs 137.75 cr, taking worldwide gross to Rs 326.98 cr.

Week-wise India net shows the shape of a long theatrical run: Rs 52.30 cr in Week 1, Rs 49.85 cr in Week 2, Rs 33.30 cr in Week 3, Rs 16.75 cr in Week 4 and Rs 8.77 cr in Week 5. The later-week declines are the normal curve of a film that has already done its heavy lifting.

Showtime curve: evening and night carry the day

Day 37 overall occupancy for the Malayalam 2D version was 39.53%, split cleanly across showtimes: morning 16.67%, afternoon 26.33%, evening 38.25% and night 40.08%.

For distribution and cinema marketing teams, this is a template for where to protect screens in a late run:

  • A 51.1% Saturday rise came even as show count dropped by 29.
  • Occupancy moved from 20.2% to 29.0%, an 8.8 percentage-point improvement.
  • Night and evening slots were nearly two-and-a-half times as full as mornings.

Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar is running the same weekend pattern

Parvathy Thiruvothu’s Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar collected Rs 87 lakh net on Day 16 from 621 shows at 34.0% occupancy, a 58.2% day-on-day rise. Its India net now stands at Rs 21.86 cr, with India gross at Rs 25.45 cr.

The two titles offer a useful comparison for media planners: a deeply established film can generate Rs 68 lakh from 581 shows by trimming slack, while a younger film needs 621 shows to hit Rs 87 lakh at a similar stage of weekend demand.

What the number means for the business

The actionable reading is not “cut screens and revenue will rise.” It is that showtime-level occupancy should guide scheduling decisions more than raw show count. When morning and afternoon slots drag below 30% and evening/night slots climb toward 40%, distribution teams should rebalance capacity toward the slots where demand actually lives.

The next checkpoint is whether Bethlehem Kudumba Unit can hold this occupancy in the seventh week and how much overseas gross continues to add after the domestic run narrows.
