Resident Evil (English) is now fighting to extend its India theatrical run. The film collected Rs. 0.28 crore nett on Day 8 (Friday), a 61.64% day-on-day fall from Thursday’s Rs. 0.73 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama’s box-office data. The Friday number is the sharpest drop after the film’s opening phase and takes its cumulative India nett total to Rs. 14.03 crore.
The opening arc gave it a head start
The picture opened at Rs. 2.18 crore on Day 1 and delivered Rs. 8.39 crore over its opening weekend. By the end of week one, it had banked Rs. 13.75 crore. That front-loaded shape is the key to reading the second Friday: most of the demand arrived early, and weekday holds were already thinning.
Monday brought Rs. 1.42 crore. Tuesday recovered 15.49% to Rs. 1.64 crore, but the upward move did not hold: Wednesday dipped to Rs. 1.18 crore and Thursday slipped to Rs. 0.73 crore. The Rs. 0.45 crore Thursday-to-Friday fall is therefore not a one-day blip; it extends a softening trend that began mid-week.
Occupancy is not the whole story
Bollywood Hungama reports 20.43% occupancy for Day 8. That number has to be read alongside the release footprint: the film played only 349 shows across 299 venues. On a limited screen count, a 20% occupancy figure means something different from the same percentage in a wide release. The venue and show count sets the ceiling on what any weekend bounce can add.
- Day 1 to opening weekend: Rs. 2.18 cr to Rs. 8.39 cr
- Week one close: Rs. 13.75 cr
- Day 8: Rs. 0.28 cr, down 61.64% day-on-day
Why the second weekend matters for the business
For distributors, a weak second Friday is not the final answer; it is the lead indicator for the Saturday-Sunday hold. If the weekend recovers, the title can still add a few crore and change the post-theatrical conversation. If it does not, the India total will plateau quickly and the commercial story will shift to television, streaming and ancillary buyers.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, the pattern is a useful case in reading box-office data. Front-loaded openings can create visible headlines, but holdover behaviour is what reveals demand depth. A title with a strong first weekend and a fast fade is a different asset from one with a slower build and a longer shelf life.
The next two days will show whether Resident Evil is merely correcting after a strong opening phase or whether the theatrical audience has already moved on. Either way, the current Rs. 14.03 crore total is the baseline for the rest of the run.
