South Park’s Season 29 premiere pulled in 4.2 million U.S. viewers across Paramount+ and Comedy Central in its first three days, according to multi-platform figures reported by TheWrap. That is down 29% from the 5.9 million viewers the Season 27 opener posted in July 2025.
On its own, the topline looks like a decline. But media planners should read the demo line before judging the premiere.
The topline falls, the demo strengthens
Among the 18-49 audience, the Season 29 opener rose 33% over the Season 28 premiere, moving from a 0.73 rating to a 0.97 rating. Audience share also improved, climbing 20% from 3.96 to 4.77. The episode ranked as the No. 1 non-sports cable telecast of the week in the 18-49 demo.
A rating measures the percentage of a given audience group watching; a share measures the percentage of televisions actually in use that are tuned to the program. So while fewer total people sampled the opener than in July 2025, a larger proportion of the young-adult viewing universe was watching this time.
Social adds a second signal
South Park also led as the most social cable comedy show of the day, with 11 million social views and 1 million engagements in the first three days. Online mentions of the opener reached 63,000, up 40% from the first three days of Season 28.
For planners, the split between total viewership and demo strength is the main takeaway:
- Total 3-day U.S. audience: 4.2M, down 29% from the July 2025 opener.
- 18-49 rating: 0.97, up 33% from the previous opener.
- 18-49 share: 4.77, up 20%.
- No. 1 non-sports cable telecast of the week in the 18-49 demo.
Why the split matters
Cable comedy has been a narrow-demo business for years. A show can lose casual sampling and still become more valuable to advertisers if the remaining audience is concentrated in the group a buyer is paying to reach. For an entertainment marketer, that means the opener may be more efficient than the reach number suggests, particularly if a brand is buying the 18-49 audience.
The social numbers reinforce that the premiere generated engagement, not just passive viewing, which is often the metric sponsors use to justify price premiums for high-attention properties.
New episodes continue on Wednesdays through November — Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 — at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central. Paramount+ streaming timing varies: same-day in the U.K., next day in the U.S., Canada and Australia, and Saturdays in other markets.
That predictability matters for campaign calendars. A marketer planning around a cable comedy premiere can still build a Wednesday-night social and TV flight with confidence, even if the total audience number requires a more careful story.
