What the numbers say

As of 25 September 2026, Ajith Kumar’s filmography page lists 58 films from a 1990 debut to 2025. Of the 8 entries in the table above with budget and gross data, the record is 3 hits, 1 average and 4 flops — a 38% hit rate. There are no blockbusters. Total tracked gross across these entries is ₹1,299.0 cr, and the average multiple is 1.29. That means each rupee of budget recovers ₹1.29, a thin margin for star-led projects.

The single best return in the tracked set is Yennai Arindhaal, with a 2.0 multiple. The two most expensive entries in the recent list, Vidaamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugly, are both flops. The page also carries the caution that 5 appearances are left out, so even a 58-film count may understate the length of the on-screen record.

The hits and the misses

The biggest hit by gross is Good Bad Ugly at ₹200.0 cr in 2025. But it cost ₹270.0 cr, so the multiple is only 0.74 and the verdict is Flop. That is the paradox in the table above: the largest gross is not the best result.

The weakest return is Vidaamuyarchi, also from 2025. It grossed ₹135.65 cr against a ₹225.0 cr budget, a 0.60 multiple. In other words, every ₹100 spent returned ₹60. By contrast, Yennai Arindhaal spent ₹50.0 cr and returned ₹100.0 cr. The best multiple and the worst multiple sit a decade apart, but the cost base has changed sharply.

The trend

The recent five films with a multiple average 1.05, down from 1.70 for the five before. That drop is the core of this scorecard. The last two budgets are the highest in the recent list — ₹225.0 cr and ₹270.0 cr — yet both return below 1.0. Thunivu, at ₹200.0 cr budget, missed by a single point at 0.99. Valimai, a Flop at 1.09, still grossed ₹163.2 cr against ₹150.0 cr.

This is not evidence that Ajith Kumar has lost the ability to open a film. It is evidence that budgets have risen faster than the final multiple. A gross of ₹135.65 cr to ₹200.0 cr is still a large theatrical result; the problem is when the spend starts at ₹225.0 cr or more.

What it means for the next film and the industry

For the actor’s next film, the scorecard sets a clear test. A budget above ₹200.0 cr needs a multiple above 1.0 just to avoid a flop verdict. The recent average of 1.05 leaves almost no cushion. The record also says the best path may be the Yennai Arindhaal model: a ₹50.0 cr budget with a 2.0 multiple.

For the industry, the warning is broader. Tamil star vehicles can still produce large grosses, but financing budgets that start at ₹225.0 cr and rise to ₹270.0 cr requires a hit rate better than 38%. A 1.29 average multiple across the tracked record is not a strong underwriting case. The next project should be judged less by its opening weekend and more by whether the budget leaves room for a multiple above the recent five’s 1.05.
