Dow Adds 1,500 Points as Media Stocks Rally

US media stocks turned decisively green on Wednesday after a Democratic flip of both houses of Congress lifted the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1,500 points, or 2.9%, putting it on track for one of its strongest sessions since April. The Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Russell 3000 each rose about 2%.

Disney and Comcast each gained 5%. Netflix and Skydance rose 4%. Amazon added 7%, Snap 6%, Spotify and Alphabet 4% each, and Meta 3%. Microsoft surged 6% to a new record, and Apple touched an all-time high that sent its market cap above $5 trillion.

The scoreboard

  • Dow: +1,500 points, or 2.9%
  • Disney, Comcast: +5%; Netflix, Skydance: +4%
  • Amazon: +7%; Snap: +6%; Spotify, Alphabet: +4%; Meta: +3%
  • Microsoft: +6%, new record; Apple: market cap above $5 trillion
  • Nvidia: -2%; Tesla: -2%; SpaceX: -3%

The broad rally follows an early sell-off as election returns began arriving Tuesday evening. Sentiment flipped before Wednesday’s open. The reversal matters for media operators because political uncertainty, and the question of whether the result would be accepted, had been a drag on planning.

Why the split matters

Not every technology name joined the rally. Nvidia fell 2% as traders weighed whether the new Congress will target the energy-hungry data centers that power artificial intelligence. Elon Musk’s companies also missed the surge: Tesla fell 2% and SpaceX 3%. After spending heavily on conservative candidates, Musk joked ruefully on X about the outcome.

That divide is useful for entertainment planners. Content and streaming stocks benefited from the removal of election risk; compute-heavy businesses face a different regulatory question.

What to watch next

The rally came alongside an 8% drop in US crude after Vice President JD Vance tied the Iran war to Republican losses. Lower energy costs can ease pressure on household budgets and cinema logistics, supporting consumer-facing media. The real signal will arrive with earnings guidance. If a clearer political map turns into firmer ad commitments and content budgets, the rally will mean more than a one-day move.
