NBC News tops midterm ratings with 6.52M viewers

NBC News led the early television numbers for Tuesday’s midterm election coverage, averaging 6.52 million total viewers in primetime, according to preliminary Nielsen fast national ratings. ABC News placed second with 4.91 million, and CBS News ranked last among the six measured networks with 2.63 million.

Cable’s primetime race is tighter than it looks

In primetime, the three cable news networks finished within 50,000 viewers of each other. CNN averaged 3.93 million, MS NOW followed with 3.92 million, and Fox News posted 3.88 million.

Across the broader 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. ET window, MS NOW moved ahead of cable with 3.3 million, compared with CNN’s 3 million and Fox News’s 2.8 million.

The demo numbers buyers actually use

Total viewers tell only part of the story. NBC News also led the two key advertising demographics, drawing 2.8 million in the 25-54 demo and 2.35 million in the 18-49 demo.

ABC News was second in both demos: 1.61 million in 25-54 and 1.32 million in 18-49. CNN beat the cable competition and placed third overall, with 1.44 million in 25-54 and 1.18 million in 18-49.

Digital reaches where linear doesn’t

MS NOW posted its best YouTube day ever with 33.2 million views, according to ListenFirst. That put it clearly ahead of CNN’s 18.5 million and Fox News’s 16.2 million on the platform.

Why this matters for planners

Election night is a live-event spike: high attention, sharp demo skew and heavy cross-platform consumption. For media buyers, the total-viewer ranking is less useful than demo delivery and the digital overflow. Cable’s near tie shows that brand loyalty didn’t create a large primetime separation; the differences showed up in the longer window and on YouTube.

These figures are preliminary fast nationals, so final Nielsen ratings may move some rankings at the margins. Tuesday’s midterm gave Democrats control of the House and Senate, with Senate flips in Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas, making the coverage a high-utility news event.

The practical read: buy live news against 25-54 and 18-49, not just total viewers, and add platform video to catch audiences following results on YouTube rather than linear.
