Rajinikanth now holds both the old and the new record in Tamil cinema. Jailer 2 has closed its 17th day with ₹520.35 crore in domestic gross, edging past the ₹519.65 crore lifetime total of the actor’s 2018 2.0, as reported by Sacnilk via Mint. The margin is just ₹70 lakh, but the speed is the sharper story.
17 days, not a full lifetime
On 31 October, the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel stood at ₹520.35 crore gross and ₹444.75 crore net in India. 2.0, directed by S Shankar and co-starring Akshay Kumar, had needed its full lifetime run to set the previous benchmark.
Jailer 2 is also the fastest Tamil film to cross ₹500 crore in India. For distributors, that pace changes the arithmetic: the lifetime record was already within reach before the film’s third weekend ended.
The third Saturday shows demand is not fading
Day 17 net collection rose to ₹9.35 crore from ₹5.50 crore on Day 16, roughly a 70% jump. The Tamil version brought in ₹6.70 crore of that Saturday total. Hindi added ₹1.45 crore, Telugu ₹90 lakh, and Kannada ₹30 lakh.
That split tells a regional story first: roughly 72% of Day 17 net came from the Tamil version. The Hindi-dubbed leg is contributing, but it is not the engine.
Why the margin matters less than the momentum
The record itself is thin — ₹70 lakh separating the two films. Alone, that is a footnote. Combined with the 17-day pace and the third-weekend bounce, it signals that audience demand is still in expansion rather than exhaustion.
For media planners and release strategists, a few practical readings:
- Benchmark against the previous record-holder’s lifetime, not just the opening weekend.
- Use language splits to decide where growth is actual: Tamil is the core; Hindi is additive.
- Watch the global number: ₹790.85 crore worldwide leaves less than ₹10 crore to the ₹800 crore mark.
The global milestone is now campaign material
Overseas markets have contributed ₹270.50 crore, taking the worldwide gross to ₹790.85 crore. That puts Jailer 2 within touching distance of ₹800 crore — a milestone the producers can use for the next leg of promotion.
The biggest question for entertainment marketers is whether to keep spending on the Tamil stronghold or widen the dubbed market. The answer from the Day 17 split is that the reliable return is still regional; the broader bet is upstairs.
For now, the Tamil box office has a new leader, and it is Rajinikanth again.
