HBO Max has turned Halloween into a franchise-retention event. The streamer quietly released a surprise 30-minute episode of It: Welcome to Derry — no long-lead announcement, just a timely drop for subscribers.
The special, “A Story of Derry,” is now streaming on HBO Max. It is set hundreds of years before Pennywise and follows three youngsters who venture into the Western Wood and encounter an ancient spirit.
What the drop includes
- The release: a 30-minute special, “A Story of Derry,” now on HBO Max.
- The timing: a surprise arrival for Halloween, promoted with a short clip on Instagram.
- The franchise status: Season 2 is greenlit, with scripts about halfway written.
- The next season: expected in late 2027 or 2028, set in 1935 around the Bradley Gang massacre.
Not just a holiday extra
For entertainment marketers, the more important number is the distance between now and the next full season. The show premiered on HBO Max on Oct. 26, 2025, but Season 2 is not expected until late 2027 or 2028. That is a long window, and a surprise short special is a low-cost way to keep the title in feeds and app queues.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane told Deadline that Season 2 will depict Pennywise in a “way you’ve never seen that character before.” He also said the writing team is roughly halfway through scripts, with a production schedule in place and director Andy Muschietti out casting. That makes this special less of a standalone stunt and more of a bridge asset for a franchise that will need to regain attention closer to launch.
Why the play matters
Surprise drops are not new, but they are underused as a lifecycle tactic. Most platforms concentrate promotional spend around a premiere. Here, HBO Max is using a 30-minute piece of existing IP to re-activate subscribers around a cultural moment. The content cost is small relative to a new season, and the social clip does the work of reacquainting audiences with Derry.
For media planners, the takeaway is clear: a timed surprise can be a retention lever, not just an acquisition moment. If HBO Max later reports viewership for the special, that data will show whether this format moves the needle between seasons.
