Jailer 2, Rajinikanth’s follow-up to the 2023 hit Jailer, is now in its third week and still adding enough each weekday to keep the trade’s bigger question alive: can it become the first Tamil film to cross ₹1,000 crore in worldwide gross?
Day 15 numbers from Sacnilk show the usual midweek cooling. The film collected ₹5.90 crore net in India on Thursday, October 29, down 18.1% from ₹7.20 crore a day earlier. It played 10,313 shows.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and backed by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 carries a cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, S.J. Suryah, Mohanlal, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Mithun Chakraborty. The scale of the release is why the film is being read as a pan-India and overseas play, not only a Tamil Nadu event.
The running totals
- Domestic net total: ₹429.55 crore
- India gross: ₹502.65 crore
- Worldwide gross: ₹765.15 crore
- Day 15 overseas: ₹2 crore
The Tamil version contributed ₹3.20 crore on day 15, while the Telugu version added ₹1.40 crore. For marketing teams, the language-level data is the operational takeaway: Tamil contributed more than twice the Telugu number, so incremental spends are likely to find the most immediate returns in Tamil-language media and influencers, while Telugu remains a secondary but expandable market.
Why the ₹1,000-crore mark matters
Veteran Tamil cinema distributor and financier Tiruppur Subramaniam expects Jailer 2 to be the first Tamil movie to cross ₹1,000 crore globally. He also expects it to beat the distributor share record held by Leo — ₹117 crore in Tamil Nadu, currently the largest for any Tamil film in the state.
Distributor share matters more than gross in local distribution because it is the amount that flows back to distributors after exhibitors take their cut. That is the real measure of profitability in a market where gross numbers can be lifted by high ticket prices and overseas currency conversion.
The projection is not a guarantee. But it sets a high bar for the film’s final weeks and gives the Tamil market a new reference point after Leo’s record run.
What to watch next
For media planners and film-business teams, this is a useful benchmark: a big Tamil title is now being tracked for global gross, language splits and local distributor share at the same time. The weekday dip is not a warning sign on its own; the screen count stayed above 10,000 shows, which signals exhibitors are not cutting the film loose.
The test is whether the next weekend holds strongly enough to push the worldwide number from ₹765.15 crore toward the projected ₹1,000 crore mark.
