After a $500M Hit, Curry Barker Returns to YouTube Horror

Curry Barker is back on YouTube with a new horror short, returning to the channel that helped build his audience before his feature breakout.

The five-minute film, Mama Bear, landed Thursday on the That’s a Bad Idea channel, the sketch comedy series Barker co-runs with Cooper Tomlinson. It is sponsored by Windows and follows Floyd, a young man whose nap is interrupted by disturbing phone calls before the story takes a darker turn built around a doppelgänger.

A quick, brand-backed return

Costume designer Blair James said the production came together fast. “We shot this three and a half weeks ago; it was a really quick turnaround,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

The short reunites Barker with Obsession crew members including production designer Vivian Gray and James. The cast includes Jon Lee Richardson, Katie Sarife, Ericka Kreuz and Joshua Snyder.

  • Five-minute runtime, sponsored by Windows
  • Shot three and a half weeks before release
  • Premiered on the That’s a Bad Idea YouTube channel
  • Ends with Floyd being shot by Lacey, then reveals a doppelgänger

Why the return matters

Before Obsession, Barker built his name on YouTube with projects such as Heavy Eyes, Enigma, Warnings, The Chair and Milk & Serial. His 2023 short The Chair drew the attention of producer James Harris and helped create a path to feature filmmaking.

Obsession opened May 15 on a reported $750,000 budget and has grossed more than $500 million worldwide. It earned a Gotham Audience Award nomination earlier this week.

For entertainment marketers, the lesson is straightforward. A low-cost, platform-native short can act as a retention and sponsorship vehicle, keeping a filmmaker visible between theatrical windows. The Windows backing also makes Mama Bear a tidy brand-funded content moment timed to Halloween.

What to watch next

Barker’s next feature, Anything But Ghosts, is slated for May 7, 2027 from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Spooky Pictures. He is also attached to write and direct a reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Sarife is set to appear in Medium Rare, an upcoming short from Barker’s father, Jeff Barker.

The takeaway for platform strategists: a fast-turnaround short during a cultural moment can reactivate an existing fanbase and feed a larger release pipeline without waiting for a full campaign.
