Qilin Li’s “Variant” is going global the old-fashioned way: one territory at a time.
Sales agent Cappu Films brought the Chinese sci-fi action thriller to TIFFCOM, the market attached to the Tokyo International Film Festival, and walked away with a slate of distribution deals across four continents.
The deal map
International Media Network has picked up the United States and Canada. MT Trading has Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. Blue Swan Entertainment has Italy, Italian-speaking Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City. Great Movies has Latin America. Media4Fun has Poland. Dimension Pictures has South Asia’s SAARC territories, and San Chi Films has Taiwan. A Japan deal was arranged by Bob Jones of IPA Asia.

Why the buyers bit
The film follows Jamie, who survived an alien attack on a spacecraft. Two decades later, after making it to Earth, he faces a new variant of the same creature and must confront the threat that wiped out his family. Jim Liu, known for “The Farewell” and “Ip Man 4: The Finale,” stars with Shuting Yang and Philippe Joly.
For distributors, the pitch is straightforward: a creature-action story travels without needing deep local cultural context. Cappu Films frames the project as part of a relationship, not a one-off. The company previously worked with director Qilin Li on “Mutant.” Janice Woo of Cappu Films said, “We like building relationships with filmmakers that continue from one film to the next.”
What the territory model signals
Territory-by-territory licensing turns one production into a series of local releases, each with its own buyer, release window and marketing investment. That spreads risk for the producer and lets local distributors adapt the campaign to their market.
Terms were not disclosed, and Cappu Films says it is still talking to buyers in territories that remain open. If you are tracking independent genre buyers, the deal sheet is a useful indicator of which distributors are still active in fall-market acquisitions, and which titles may surface in which windows later.
