Keanu Reeves Boards Netflix’s ‘Maelstrom,’ a 1993 Spec Revival

Keanu Reeves takes over Netflix's Maelstrom

What happened

Keanu Reeves is stepping into the Netflix action thriller Maelstrom after Reacher star Alan Ritchson exited the project. Jaume Collet-Serra, who previously directed Carry-On for the streamer, is attached to direct.

The premise is a single-night pressure cooker. A federal marshal is guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer as she prepares to testify against him. A hurricane rolls in, cutting off communication and reinforcements, and the pair must survive both the storm and the men sent after them.

Why this matters

Netflix is not starting from scratch. Maelstrom was originally sold as a spec script to Warner Bros. in 1993 by Jeff Robinov, then an agent. Variety reported at the time that the package was “widely described as ‘Diehard’ in a hurricane,” with a sale price in the range of $225,000 to $625,000. Adjusted for inflation over 33 years, that is closer to $500,000 to $1.4 million.

This is the first film under Robinov’s new Netflix deal. The former Warner Bros. Pictures president has handled billion-dollar franchises such as The Dark Knight trilogy and The Hangover.

For Netflix, the move is a bet on a familiar formula: a globally recognised star, a contained action premise, and a director who has already delivered for the platform. It is franchise-style packaging without the cost of buying an existing franchise.

What to watch

  • Why Alan Ritchson left remains unclear. Page Six Hollywood first reported the casting, but no reason was given for his departure.
  • Reeves has kept his action cred through The Matrix and John Wick, and continues to be in demand — with talks for James Wan’s The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil at Paramount and a return as Shadow in 2027’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
  • The script is being polished by Mark Bianculli from a first draft by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick.

The Ritchson-to-Reeves switch also changes the package’s centre of gravity. Ritchson brings television-scale recognition from Reacher; Reeves brings decades of worldwide theatrical action equity. That has implications for how Netflix markets the film across regions, especially where Reeves’ older titles remain popular on the service.

Platform buyers should read this as a reminder that star-led action still compresses launch risk. The bigger test is whether a 33-year-old high-concept spec can feel current for an audience that has already seen countless “trapped in a storm” thrillers.
