Netflix bets on Spanish literary IP with La Regenta

Netflix starts La Regenta with Mar Coll and Elastica Films

Netflix has begun production on La Regenta, a contemporary film take on Leopoldo Alas’s 1884 novel, with director Mar Coll attached to direct. Elastica Films’ María Zamora is producing, marking the Spanish production house’s first project for Netflix.

The novel follows a deeply unfulfilled woman married to a much older retired regent in the fictional cathedral city of Vetusta. In the new version, that material is being reinterpreted from a female point of view, with Coll writing the screenplay alongside Anna R Costa and Diego Vega.

The cast includes Ester Expósito, Oriol Pla, Vito Sanz, Borja Luna, Clara Ingold, Carlos González, Ana Torrent, Itsaso Arana and Gonzalo de Castro.

Why this matters for streaming buyers

This is not being framed as a heritage costume play. Netflix is taking a canonical title and repositioning it around a woman’s interior life. That matters for two reasons: it gives Spanish-language content a marketable contemporary hook, and it pairs a distinctive director with a recognisable IP title.

Coll’s note on approach is the clearest signal of positioning:

“I have tried to approach the material, humbly, from a radically personal perspective.”

She also describes the central character’s “sensitivity and stubborn search” as “a form of resistance.”

  • A classic novel is being updated, not just remade, with the female character’s desire at the centre.
  • Elastica Films gets its first Netflix credit, a relationship worth watching for future Spanish slate deals.
  • The cast and literary source give the film local recognition and global festival potential.

What to do with it

Media planners should file this under Spanish-language drama with a storytelling refresh, not period literary adaptation. For entertainment marketers, it is a live example of moving classic IP toward younger audiences by changing whose perspective the story serves.

No viewership or release data exists yet. The actionable detail is early: Netflix is filling its European slate with known stories and auteur voices, and planners who track it now will have a head start when the title gets dated and promoted.
