Disney is putting a Marvel Avenger in front of a soccer crowd. For the first ABC broadcast of ElClásico, the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid, ESPN and Marvel Studios have built a cross-platform campaign around Vision, the character voiced by Paul Bettany in the Marvel films and the new Disney+ series.
The move is more than a novelty. It is a deliberate attempt to make a passionate but relatively niche US soccer audience feel bigger as the match moves to broadcast television.
The promotional stack
The centrepiece is a 30-second promo scheduled to air in both English- and Spanish-language pre-game coverage. ESPN FC’s X and Facebook accounts will share the vignette ahead of the match.
- A Paul Bettany Q&A focused on soccer, distributed across ESPN FC social platforms.
- A motion poster on ESPN FC’s Instagram and TikTok Stories and ESPN Deportes’ Instagram Story.
- Week-long promotion on “Live with Kelly and Mark” and ESPN studio shows such as “SportsCenter.”
- Content from Barcelona by creators Devin Caherly and Dylan Acanfora.
A two-sided audience trade
For ESPN, the goal is simple: borrow Marvel’s broad entertainment fanbase to widen the audience for a sports property moving to ABC. For Marvel, the benefit runs the other way. The promotion puts Vision and the Disney+ series in front of live sports viewers, one of the few audiences that still gathers at a set time. No outside media budget is required; Disney is trading attention across its own portfolio.
For marketers and media planners, this is franchise IP being used as a tune-in lever, not just a content play. The campaign does not rely on one ad. It layers pre-game spots, short-form Stories, social Q&A and creator content, and it repeats the message in English and Spanish.
Why the ABC window matters
Moving ElClásico to ABC changes the audience math. Broadcast television still reaches households that a cable or streaming-only match may not, but it also asks for broader appeal. A sports property can no longer rely only on die-hard fans; it must pull in casual viewers who may know the rivalry only by reputation.
That is exactly why ESPN reached for Marvel. A superhero is a familiar, general-audience hook. The broadcast window, the star players and the entertainment crossover all point in the same direction: getting non-soccer viewers to sample the match.
What to watch
The telecast begins at 4 p.m. Eastern on ABC and will also be available on ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN App. Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior are expected to play.
The real test is not whether a Marvel character can sell soccer as a one-off stunt, but whether the ABC broadcast draws casual viewers beyond the regular ElClásico audience. If it does, expect Disney to repeat the playbook across live sports windows.
