Ranabaali tops ₹70 cr worldwide, break-even still far

Vijay Deverakonda’s period action drama Ranabaali crossed two milestones on its ninth day: ₹50 crore in India net collections and ₹70 crore in worldwide gross. The Saturday session added ₹2.80 crore net across 1,569 shows, a 33.3% lift over Friday.

The Day 9 scorecard

Saturday’s ₹2.80 crore pushed the film’s India net total to ₹50.10 crore and its India gross to ₹58.25 crore. Overseas contributed ₹0.40 crore on Day 9, taking the global gross to ₹70.10 crore, of which ₹11.85 crore has come from international markets.

The per-show average was ₹17,846, with occupancy at 34% across the day. Night shows for the Telugu 2D version were the strongest at 41.2%.

  • Day 9 net: ₹2.80 crore, up 33.3% over Friday
  • India totals: ₹50.10 crore net, ₹58.25 crore gross
  • Overseas total: ₹11.85 crore gross
  • Worldwide gross: ₹70.10 crore

The number that actually matters

The milestone sounds like a hit, but the film’s own economics set a different bar. Ranabaali was reportedly mounted on a budget of about ₹120 crore. Roughly ₹60 crore is said to have been recovered from non-theatrical deals such as digital, satellite and audio rights.

Pre-release trade estimates put the theatrical break-even requirement at ₹60-65 crore in distributor share — the money that flows back to distributors after theatre and tax deductions. Worldwide gross of ₹70 crore is not the same thing, which means the film has not cleared its recovery hurdle yet.

Overseas buyers are hurting

The overseas business is the most visible trouble spot. The film was sold internationally at the highest price of Deverakonda’s career, but the collections have not matched that pricing. Trade trackers cited in the Sacnilk report project a loss of 55% to 60% for overseas buyers.

That gap is a pricing lesson for the entertainment trade: a star’s peak asking price is not a data-backed territorial valuation. When comparable period dramas show lower recovery in the same markets, paying a career-high price sets up losses even before release day.

The Telugu belt is doing the heavy lifting

Day 9’s collections were heavily concentrated in the home market: AP/Telangana logged ₹2.90 crore, Karnataka ₹30 lakh and Tamil Nadu just ₹3 lakh. The film is, for all practical purposes, a single-territory play.

The opening week closed at ₹52.55 crore India gross and ₹63.65 crore worldwide gross, in the face of competition from Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. Advance sales for Day 10 stood at 118,115 tickets across 1,714 shows as of early Sunday.

What to watch next

For media planners and film-business teams, the next two weeks will test whether the Telugu market can push distributor share past the ₹60-65 crore line. The holiday-boosted weekdays are behind it; ordinary working days are now the real benchmark.

Set against the Madras Famine of 1876-78 in Rayalaseema, Ranabaali stars Deverakonda with Rashmika Mandanna, directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers.
