Nearly $200 million. That is the reported budget for A24’s film adaptation of FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, making it the studio’s most expensive project by a wide margin and one of the biggest gaming adaptations in the pipeline. The film is dated for March 3, 2028, with Alex Garland writing and directing.
A ceiling reset, not an incremental step
A24’s previous costliest film was Marty Supreme at roughly $70 million, which itself had edged past Civil War at about $50 million. A production budget near $200 million is almost triple the studio’s record. That shift matters more than the dollar figure alone: it pushes A24 into blockbuster economics where theatrical performance, merchandising and global rollout carry more weight than the studio’s traditional prestige cycle.
The source material is young but proven. Elden Ring launched in February 2022, features world-building by George R.R. Martin, and has sold more than 36 million copies across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. Principal photography is expected to run about 100 days, with Kit Connor, Tom Burke, Rose Liu and Nick Offerman among the cast.
Why a $200M A24 bet matters
A24 built its reputation on lean budgets and high cultural returns. Now the studio is borrowing the scale play from major studios while they, in turn, are trying to copy A24’s formula. A Wall Street Journal report quotes Telluride director Julie Huntsinger calling the studio “a Goldilocks company. Just the right amount of people doing just the right amount of things.” A $200 million adaptation of a hardcore game franchise tests whether that balance survives the jump to event-film size.
- It elevates A24 from mid-budget originals to big-budget gaming IP.
- It pairs a 36-million-copy game audience with an auteur director, a hedge against genre-only marketing.
- It gives media planners a concrete 2028 title to track as a brand-scalability case study.
What a marketer should do with this
Don’t assume a 36-million-copy game automatically converts to the same number of ticket buyers. The useful framing is how A24 positions a blockbuster without sounding like every other franchise campaign. Watch whether the first materials lead with the George R.R. Martin-built world or with Garland’s auteur identity; that choice will signal how the studio plans to expand beyond the core player base.
The opening weekend expectation is still years out, but for slate planning the title should now sit on 2028 release calendars alongside major studio franchises. If A24 can make a $200 million bet feel like an A24 film, it changes what “prestige” means for IP. If it can’t, the brand risks becoming just another spender.
