Prime Video is extending a mid-budget rom-com into a global sequel play. Leslie Bibb has boarded Upgraded 2 opposite returning star and producer Camila Mendes, with production set to start this month in Italy.
Amazon MGM Studios has taken worldwide distribution on the film and will release it in more than 240 countries and territories on Prime Video. Becca Gleason directs; Luke Roberts and Justin Matthews, who wrote the first film, return to write.
The asset is the footprint
The 2024 original, financed by Gulfstream Pictures, followed Mendes as an art-auction-house intern who poses as the director to impress a wealthy man; the lie eventually threatens both her career and the relationship. Sequel details are being kept quiet.
For streaming buyers, the more important number is the rights map. A single production becomes a 240-plus market launch on one platform, giving the sequel a global shelf from day one. That changes how the film is valued internally: it is no longer a single-territory bet but a catalogue and acquisition tool across markets.
The producing group also reflects that ambition. Gulfstream’s Mike Karz and Bill Bindley, Honor Role’s Mendes and Rachel Matthews, Luber Roklin’s Lena Roklin, and Tempo’s Piers Tempest are attached.
Bibb brings current awards heat
Bibb arrives after an Emmy-nominated guest turn in HBO’s Hacks, a return to Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, and an ensemble role in The White Lotus season 3. She also has upcoming leads in The Rush Whisperer for HBO and the Prime Video romantic comedy Escorted.
That profile gives the sequel a second marketing hook. Known IP plus a returning lead plus a newly added actor with current awards momentum is a slate package made for broad discovery, not just fans of the first film.
- Leslie Bibb joins Camila Mendes; Becca Gleason directs.
- Amazon MGM Studios controls worldwide rights; the Prime Video release spans 240+ countries and territories.
- Production begins this month in Italy, with the original screenwriters returning.
The number still missing
The announcement does not reveal how the first Upgraded performed in viewing hours or completion. That matters because a sequel’s green light on streaming is a private-data decision until the platform chooses to release a number. The public case here is distribution scale and cast, not audience proof.
The test is post-launch: whether a 240-plus market footprint converts into retention, new subscriptions, or enough repeat viewing to justify a third film.
